Who we are

Committed to mass production

3DC is a startup that began at Tohoku University in Japan. From the day we were founded, our mission has been to industrialize Japanese-born technology ourselves. We reached kilogram-scale production of a new material within two years of founding.

Nanostructure control from the user's perspective

A proprietary production process makes GMS the world's first carbon material whose structure can be controlled at the nanoscale. By tuning that nanostructure to each manufacturer's requirements, we maximize the performance of your materials and components.

Distinctive physical and chemical properties

Beyond the high conductivity expected of a carbon material, GMS combines several characteristics no conventional carbon has offered — dispersibility and thermal insulation arising from its hollow structure, and reversible elastic deformation arising from its unique sponge architecture — making it promising across a wide range of applications.

The 3DC team

Our mission

3DC exists to bring Graphene MesoSponge® (GMS), an innovative carbon material born in Japan, to the world. Our goal is to move beyond the limits of conventional carbon materials by flexibly adapting structure and properties to end-user needs, and in doing so to maximize performance.

GMS is not simply another new carbon material. It is a carbon material engineered with atomic-level precision, which lets us build variants from the nanostructure up around customer needs that could not be met before. In one field it raises electrical conductivity; in another it adds reversible elastic deformation to absorb stress. Applications are anticipated across fields from electronic devices to environmental technology.

GMS also helps reduce supply chain risk. What distinguishes it is the combination of processes used to make it, not any dependence on unusual raw materials or equipment. Free of constraints on raw materials or equipment, GMS can in principle be produced anywhere in the world, enabling supply chains that are resilient to geopolitical risk.

Beyond academia, companies across many industries are using GMS to maximize the performance of their materials and components. Through the development and sale of GMS, 3DC aims to be a partner that accelerates your research.

Advantages unlocking your performance

Precise nanostructure

A proprietary process makes GMS a material whose structure can be controlled at the nanometer level on an industrial scale. Hollow structures and aggregate size can be freely tuned to your requirements.

High electrical conductivity

GMS is a three-dimensional graphene. The extensive, highly crystalline graphene planes that form its three-dimensional structure give it conductivity exceeding that of carbon black and carbon nanotubes.

Reversible deformation

GMS is built from five- and seven-membered rings in addition to six-membered rings, and its stable, robust three-dimensional graphene structure deforms elastically. It is the first carbon material in the world to achieve multidirectional stress absorption.

Chemical durability

During production, a zipping reaction chemically bonds the carbon edges to form exceptionally broad graphene planes. The resulting scarcity of edge functional groups gives GMS outstanding chemical durability.

High purity and quality

GMS is a high-purity, highly crystalline three-dimensional mesoporous carbon material, with very few impurities or defects thanks to our proprietary synthesis process. 3DC develops, manufactures, and sells it as an advanced material for applications with demanding specifications, such as conductive additives for batteries and Si-C composite anodes, backed by consistent quality control at mass-production scale.

Stable supply

The raw materials for GMS can be sourced from multiple countries. Even in the face of geopolitical risk, it is a rare material that can be supplied in stable quantities at stable prices.
